A Cracking Night Out

The 70th Colquhoun Dinner, hosted by JCI Glasgow

A Cracking Night Out

The Colquhoun Dinner is a Glasgow Junior Chamber tradition, and the highlight of their calendar. This year saw the 70th dinner, coinciding with the Platinum anniversary of their founding.

The evening, steeped in heritage, is hosted at the Trades Hall in Glasgow. After dinner are a number of speeches, with two main ones- one toasting Glasgow 100 years ago, with the other to "Our Illustrious Forebears" with a toast to a son or daughter of the city who has achieved something deserving. This year we were toasting Jock Stein, the footballer.

The highlight of the evening was after the dinner. For the first, and possibly the last time (!) in the history of the event, dinner was followed with a celidh in the main hall. JCI Edinburgh was represented on the evening by Lesley. Brian and Ally and while Lesley and Ally were tripping the light fantastic on the freshly polished floor of the Trades Hall, disaster struck...one twirl too many saw Ally crumple to the floor, which, after four hours in A&E at the GRI was diagnosed as a broken ankle!

The ironic coincidence is that Jock Stein was forced to retire from playing football in 1956 after persistent ankle injuries...
