"The Ice Man Cometh" by Stuart Ullathorne
The Ice-man and JCI
Before I begin - ENHANCE have kindly provided an MP3 recording of the evening, so why not download it now from: http://www.enhance.biz/training_programs/JCI_realise_your_goals.php
JCI Edinburgh training patron Michael Christon of ENHANCE delivered a fun and dynamic workshop on realising goals on the 15th November at the Apex City Hotel. Entitled "The Ice-man cometh" it focused on a goal realisation technique designed and created by Michael and the Ice-man of the title who we discovered was Craig Mathieson. As a child having read a book on one of the toughest ever expeditions to the South Pole ever undertaken Craig immediately had the goal of wanting to reach that desolate part of the world. As an adult he made plans to achieve just that and he put those into practice to successfully achieve his goal. Michael explained he reached the Pole in 56 days having endured temperatures as low as minus 70 degrees and suffering numerous injuries including a snapped tendon in his leg.
Michael stated that Craig had NOT used the basic SMART (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic, Time specific) goal setting technique to make his dream expedition come to reality. He had naturally used a technique much more powerful where he had connected to his own values at a deep level, and from there enjoyed the freedom to really know what he wanted and the sustained motivation to succeed.
The session explored the techniques that Craig had used and which Michael had "modelled" to be able to share them with those wanting to understand just how to succeed in their goals.
Brainstorming of values of the group with a focus on means and end values took place with some interesting answers including one participant valuing no bullsh*tting! It did get everybody thinking about being true to ourselves as we then explored our values in more depth in pairs. In doing so as we questioned each other to get to our true values many if not all attending achieved a heightened awareness of what makes them tick, some even experienced a very real physical change. As Michael would say there is a "sparkle in the eyes which only comes from having enjoyed a glimpse of who you REALLY are and what you now know is your potential, both professionally and personally."
To end the session Michael guided us as we created a motivating and inspiring future where our goals were realised from the re-discovered knowledge of our values.
As ever with the training that JCI Edinburgh is given by ENHANCE it was an evening which was very insightful and engaging.
