Our February training and personal development session was "The funny way to improve Confidence, Communication and Team Work", an improv comedy workshop with Lauren Berning and Peter Aitchison of "To Be Continued...". "To Be Continued..." is a improvisational comedy troupe based in Edinburgh, Scotland. They perform short- and long-form style improv locally and all around Scotland. The main objective of this session was to improve confidence, but also communication and team work skills. It was a fun way to get people on their feet, performing improv in a relaxed and supportive environment with demonstrations from Lauren and Peter.
We did some group improv exercises with a variety of random objects, with the instruction to just say the first thing that comes into your mind. There was a collective thought of what if nothing comes to mind, but this session demonstrated that the participants have active imaginations, could improvise and be comfortable in the spotlight. We also acted out some improv exercises in pairs, under the expert eyes of Lauren and Peter, including the alphabet game and a two headed monster. What seemed very scary at the beginning of the session was actually fun and easy to do. A great way to boost your confidence, use your imagination and have a laugh.
Here is what some of our members said about the session:-
"Very interactive, very comfortable" "I found it really useful to hear how the techniques could be applied to work, and it was fun at the same time!" "I found the Thinking on your feet skills useful" "It was too short!! I would have really liked to have spent another few hours playing" "Easy and fun to get into. Totally inclusive and encouraging" "Definitely worth doing. I could see it being an excellent team building exercise as people were really bonding through it. It is interesting watching peoples confidence building through the exercises. Really brought people out of their shells"
"Want to do more!"
"To Be Continued..." performs shows regularly and operates weekly improvisational workshops for the general public. For more information and dates of shows, please go to their website. http://www.tbcimprov.co.uk/
